Texas All-State Recordings
Auditioning for Texas All-State is a big challenge and I want to do what I can to help! I'm happy to provide annotated PDF copies of the All-State Etudes! These correct misprints, are easier to read, and have all cuts included!
All Texas All-State etudes come from etudes that are in the public domain. Students are encouraged to download the public domain versions from IMSLP.org, or to purchase an appropriate edition as recommended by their private teacher, but my versions should be helpful for the audition process. ATSSB Lyrical Etude- Weissenborn #15
This year's lyrical etude is an excerpt from one of the books loveliest! It should be very operatic or singing in style and full of melodic shaping. Try learning the whole etude!
TMEA Etude #1- Classical Studies #14
This classical style etude is marked in cut time and should always be felt in 2, or even in 1! Reinforce the classical style by making it sound light and effortless—especially when it isn't! Pay attention to which grace notes come before the beat and which come after!
TMEA Etude #3- Classical Studies #12
The last TMEA etude is a two-part dance in 3/8—so it should be felt in 1! Keep the grace notes close to the beat and snappy and try not to emphasize notes that aren't on beat 1.
ATSSB Technical Etude- Weissenborn #3
This year's technical etude is from early in the book. Be sure to still make your best sound quality, even with staccato, and flick those notes above the staff!
TMEA Etude #2- Classical Studies #21
This is our "lyrical" etude this year, but it's full of super fast notes! Work on the runs very slowly and smoothly and pay attention to their rhythmic value. Don't move early off of ties and dots, and don't rush the "easy parts!"
